Community service work is charity service by an individual or a group of individuals or an organisation that is aimed towards the betterment of the public or the society. While some may perform such activities out of choice, others may be compelled to do so as a part of a court or government order, or a sentence that they have to serve for a definite period of time. Hence, it would not be right to say that all participants in the field of community service work are volunteers by their own free will. Community service work may be offered at many levels. It can either be offered to children, youth, old aged, the homeless, the less privileged or the differently abled. Means of providing services are many; they may either be tangible or intangible. Tangible services are those which can be physically felt, be it donation of books, food, clothes etc. Intangible services are those which cannot be physically felt, for example, teaching. Providing effective community service to the senior citizens is highly appreciated these days. The numbers of old age homes are on the rise. With the concept of nuclear families becoming an increasing trend in today’s scenario, many find it difficult to accommodate their aged parents at home, hence causing them to move to old age homes. While old age homes may provide senior citizens with the basic materialistic objects for a living, which is food, clothing and shelter, staying away from their families deprives them of what they need the most – love. Community service may not only involve taking them for outings, but may also involve regular interactions with their families. Volunteers may also spend quality time with senior citizens by talking to them about various facets of their lives; they should be encouraged to pursue interests.
